Jerry Bondi: I've never heard such nonsense in my life. And the more fences there are, the more he hates them. Jack Burns: A westerner likes open country. You act like a man who thinks he's going to break out of jail. I haven't got enough spit left to wet a stick of gum. an invisible horse and an invisible cowboy. Believe you me, if it didn't take men to make babies I wouldn't have anything to do with any of you!. Isn't that odd? I heard a horse and I knew it was your horse. Temper like that and one of these days you'll find yourself riding through town with your belly to the sun, your best suit on and no place to go but hell. Any of you boys interfere, I'll use both arms. This fellow wants action, I'm glad to accommodate him, do it with one arm behind my back.Opening line, to his horse as he watches jet contrails in the sky. He then proceeds to go on a wild goose chase to get away from the cops as he plans to escape to Mexico. It is at this point that Burns reveals who he really is: a terminal loner, a man who refuses to be constrained by any person or laws and will continue to live the way he wants live even though he realizes that it will probably be the end of him. Burns leaves without him and briefly meets up again with Jerry. However, his biggest challenge comes when he finds out that Paul has changed his ways and does not wish to break free for fear of ruining the his or his family lives. Gutierrez clearly demonstrates that he does not respect Burns and has no qualms with giving him a beating. He must contend with a sadistic cop named Gutierrez, played by George Kennedy, who bears a vicious smile and frequently repeats Burn's full name in a mock-sophisticated accent that I can only compare to the mannerisms of a Ron White stand-up routine. While he eventually finds his way into jail, Burns soon runs into some problems.
